From the time ‘The Kerala Story’ film has been announced, the movie has constantly been in the headlines for its subject. The movie was based on how ISIS terrorists brainwashed three girls, radicalized them. Sonia Balani who played a negative role as Asifa in the movie has opened up about the film and the response she received for her character.

In a recent Interview, Sonia Balani revealed how the shooting for The Kerala Story has affected her. She said, as the movie is based on true events, she has faced challenges while shooting the scenes.
Sonia also revealed that she anticipated that she would receive hate from few people as there are some scenes where she has many strong lines about the Gods. She added ‘I know there are some people who are not happy, but if they realize that it’s a true story and the motive is only to create awareness of terrorist groups.’
She acknowledged the importance of doing justice to such hard hitting and thought provoking subjects and accepting the challenges that come playing such roles. “I am happy that people have received it well, giving us so much support, appreciating our work. Somewhere in our hearts we know this has happened for real and that’s why we aren’t in much mood to celebrate it in a big way”, Sonia said.

Talking about the hate and abusive messages she has been receiving on social media, she said ‘I won’t lie that it doesn’t scare me……I was avoiding going out due to this for some time.’ She feels grateful for her family and audience support. Director Sudipto Sen had thoroughly researched the events before shooting the film, she concluded.
